    vabbè, vi lascio

Before London's Bloc Weekend 2012 went pear-shaped, something wonderful happened. Steve Reich (on the right) personally performed Clapping Music with David Cossin of the Bang On A Can All-Stars ensemble. Reich is one of the greatest living composers, a pioneer who played a key role in creating what we call minimalist music, and he has won the Pulitzer Prize for Music. Clapping Music (written in 1972) utilises the human body as it's instrument, and can thus be seen as his most primitive composition, one that requires no instrument beyond that with which we are born. One human beats a phrase with his hands, the other beats a phrase that starts the same, but then beats out of phase by a quaver, and keeps on shifting by a quaver every 12 bars, until 144 bars later they are back in sync. For me, this is a metaphor for human cooperation and bonding, for the two who break apart (and we all do) ultimately come back together. This is a beautiful thing, and it was a privilege to watch Steve Reich perform his own composition with percussion expert, David Cossin. Before Bloc Weekend went pear-shaped, Amon Tobin put on his ISAM (Invented Sounds Applied to Music) Visual and Audio Spectacular in the Main Arena. I had never seen or heard anything like it. If Steve Reich demonstrated human evolution from ape to man, by foregrounding the intelligent use of our hands, then Amon Tobin (with help from Visual Effects Geniuses, V Squared) shows us the next stage of human evolution, when humans will meld with machines. Here, the track "Piece of Paper" (1.15 - 3.45) is preceded by the conclusion of the track "Journeyman" and followed by the beginning of the track, "Bedtime Stories." This allows for a more complete sense of man's impending evolution, including the image of Tobin himself piloting the projection at the beginning of the clip. Tobin collected all kinds of weird and wonderful field recordings to create a soundscape here that is utterly unique! l'ultimo doveva aspettare di vedere squarepusher, che non ha suonato, con disapprovazione di tutto il mondo.
